Enjoying a meal together is arguably one of life’s sweetest pleasures. Islander Meg Gaffney recently captured such a moment between her daughter, Emery, and Emery’s three-month-old hen, Jeanne. The Gaffneys moved to the island a little over a year ago and got their first flock of chickens this spring from Bay Hay & Feed. Jeanne, a New Hampshire Red, is named after Emery’s grandmother, a strawberry blond from New Hampshire, although ironically, Grammy Jeanne can’t eat eggs! Meg says Jeanne (the hen) has a sweet and social nature, running toward someone if they call “here girl,” and is always willing to be held or to share a treat. Jeanne is coopmate to six sisters (seen in the background): Gertrude, Sky, Everest, Betsy, Snow White and Chickaletta. Meg said that it’s been a great experience for Emery and her brother to raise the brood and that the family looks forward to many more memorable moments…and someday some eggs.
