Description
The city of Bainbridge Island will honor the late Theodore "Ted" Spearman by naming their new police and municipal court facility after him. Spearman, a longtime Bainbridge Island resident, became the first African American to serve as a judge on the Kitsap County Superior Court bench.
At a meeting on May 23, 2023, members of the Bainbridge Island City Council unanimously voted to title the facility the Ted Spearman Justice Center. Spearman passed away in 2012 after a distinguished legal career.
The Ted Spearman Justice Center will open its doors to the public on November 15, 2023. According to a city spokesperson, the new facility will consolidate police and court operations currently spread across multiple locations.
By commemorating Judge Spearman's trailblazing career and service to the community, Bainbridge Island hopes the justice center's name will preserve his legacy for generations to come.
