The firm's managing partner, Matthew Coates, achieved international acclaim by winning the "Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Home" Design Competition in 2005 and used this creative momentum to jump-start the Coates Design practice. The firm has been focused on green building and sustainable design from its inception.

Recent achievements include the groundbreaking reHOME project, an affordable housing project made out of 100% recycled and reclaimed materials, a net-zero cabin in Cle Elum, the first LEED Platinum residence outside the Seattle City limits, the LEED Silver Bainbridge Island Kid's Discovery Museum, and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, the first newly constructed LEED Gold Museum in the country.
