Walking Around Bainbridge Island

41 miles. 13 hours. One island. Islander Michael Cyger walked the entire outer edge of Bainbridge, as close to the water as the streets allow.

The 2026 Walk-About

On Thursday, August 20, 2026, I walked 41 miles around Bainbridge Island. I began at 4:40 AM just north of Fort Ward Park and arrived home around 6 PM.

“Last year I did 36 miles and thought I’d finished the loop. Then my friend Matt told me about a trail and a few streets on the north end that actually complete it. So this year I added them.”

I’m Michael Cyger, publisher of BainbridgeIsland.com. Last year, I walked 36 miles around the island — 76,830 steps — to slow down and take it all in. This year, I added the missing northern stretches and completed a longer, closer-to-the-water loop around the island.

It was a long day, but a memorable one. Walking is a different way to see home: slower than driving, biking, or running, with time to notice quiet streets, changing light, shoreline views, neighborhoods, and small moments that are easy to pass by.

The route and highlights

The day started in the dark north of Fort Ward Park. Sunrise came over Blakely Harbor, followed by Rockaway Beach, with the Space Needle visible across the water.

From there, the route continued through Pegasus Coffee House, the Eagle Harbor city dock, Wing Point, Murden Cove, Rolling Bay, Frog Rock, Port Madison, Manzanita Bay, Battle Point Park, the Gazzam Lake trails, and Crystal Springs.

I stopped for an iced mocha at Bay Hay in Rolling Bay. Fellow Islander Andrew joined me at Murden Cove, and my son Noah walked the final 10.5 miles with me.

You do not have to walk all 41 miles to enjoy the route. The stretch from Pegasus to Hawley Cove to Wing Point makes a beautiful morning walk on its own.
