Directions
Neighborhood map: Rolling Bay listing. This page is what to do when you get there.
Briny sells out.
Friday through Sunday, 7 a.m. until 2 or until the bagels are gone. Closed the other four days. Do not build a noon arrival on a Saturday and expect a dozen waiting.
Bay Hay, cafe, bagels
Bay Hay & Feed — 10355 NE Valley Road, in the 1912 Rodal building. Howard Block and Ce-Ann Parker bought it in 1979 and turned it into a New England-style general store: hay, grain, tools, then a greenhouse and organic garden supplies. The Bay Hay shirt has been circling the planet since the early eighties. Spring chicks, harvest, dogs looking for treats. This is the village living room.
Rolling Bay Cafe sits in that nursery: coffee, espresso, tea, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, paninis, salad, soup. To-go, or the covered porch and the garden. Organic and local bakers when they can.
Briny Bagels — 10255 NE Valley Road. Bagels, schmears, coffee. No phone on the listing. Until 2 p.m. or until they sell out. Friday, Saturday, Sunday only. Go early.
The post office was renamed the Bud Hawk Post Office in 2010. Bud Hawk grew up roaming these woods, then earned the Medal of Honor and four Purple Hearts as an Army machine-gunner in Europe. After the war he taught in Kitsap County. The ZIP 98061 is only the boxes at this office; the whole island uses 98110.
Rolling Bay Winery
A short drive north on Sunrise: Rolling Bay Winery, 11272 Sunrise Drive NE. Small artisan lots from Snipes Mountain. Current listing hours: Saturday and Sunday, 12–5 p.m. Confirm before you go. The larger tasting loop — including the walk-on rooms in Winslow — is wineries on Bainbridge Island.
Getting there from the ferry
The Seattle ferry lands you in Winslow. Rolling Bay is east, not a trail from the dock. Frog Rock is the painted boulder at the fork if you want the photo — pull off safely, take it, move on. It is a roadside stop, not a hike.
Car, or a booked taxi / Uber / Lyft. BI Ride is not a promise to this corner. Getting around.
