Why Did the Newt Cross the Road?

A rough skinned newt ventures across a paved road north of Fort Ward park during what appears to be a seasonal migration. These secretive amphibians spend much of their lives hidden under logs or leaf litter, emerging primarily to breed or after rainfall. Their reddish-brown, rough-textured skin helps distinguish them from similar-looking lizards. (Don't worry, this little guy made it safely across.)

Special thanks to Deborah Rudnick for assisting with the identification.
