Getting around Bainbridge Island
Winslow is a ten-minute walk from the dock. The rest of the island needs wheels. That is the whole decision. How you arrive is getting here. This page is what happens after you land. Weighing a move, not a day trip: living on Bainbridge Island.

| If this is your day | Do this |
|---|---|
| Winslow only, 4–7 hours | Walk. Terminal → Olympic Drive → Winslow Way → Waterfront Park. BIMA is at the top of the hill. |
| Bloedel, Lynwood, Pleasant Beach | BI Ride, a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or a car. Not a walk. |
| Fay, Grand Forest, Fort Ward, most wineries | Car, taxi, Uber, or Lyft. BI Ride is not a promise to those gates. |
| Kids + Battle Point playground | Car. The big play structure is not downtown. |
| Decent cyclists, Winslow waterfront | Rent at the terminal. Helmet. Hills. Not 305 with kids. |
| Already on the island with a car | You already have the answer. 305 is the spine. Roundabouts. |
At a glance
Walkable

Bloedel, beaches, Grand Forest, Lynwood, most wineries, the Exclusion Memorial.
BI Ride
Kitsap Transit. Cheap. Ferry, Bloedel, Lynwood. Book ahead. Visitors do not know it exists.
Rideshare
No taxi stand at the dock. Request taxi, Uber, or Lyft when you need it — especially leaving Bloedel.
Scale
About 10 miles north–south. Twenty to twenty-five minutes to drive the length. No freeway.

On foot
You come off the boat into the terminal, not into a pier of T-shirt shops. Restrooms as you land. Olympic Drive climbs. Rolling luggage is a slog. A stroller is fine. The Colman Dock elevator in Seattle dies constantly — have a stair plan before you even get here.
- Winslow Way is about ten minutes uphill. That is downtown. Walk-on plan: Winslow. Maps: Winslow.
- BIMA is the big building at Hwy 305 and Winslow Way. Short walk up, not at the dock. Always free.
- Waterfront Park is the harbor / playground / ferry-watching end. Off to the side of the climb, not “through town.”
- Hawley Cove is the only nearby add-on on foot — a short boardwalk, not a wilderness hike.
- Everything else is a ride. Do not “just walk to Bloedel.”

BI Ride
This is the Bloedel-without-a-car answer.
Visitors do not know BI Ride exists. It is Kitsap Transit. Cheap. Use it.
- Scheduled connector hits the ferry, Bloedel, and Lynwood / Pleasant Beach. That is the useful triangle.
- On-demand: Ride Pingo, or call about two hours ahead. Do not request it as you walk out of the garden.
- Not a promise to Fay, Fort Ward, or Grand Forest. For those: car, taxi, Uber, or Lyft.
- Official: Kitsap Transit BI Ride.
Taxi, Uber, Lyft
There is no line of cars at the Bainbridge dock. Request the ride when you need it.
- Pickup: not in the vehicle holding lot. Near the terminal / Olympic Drive end of town. In Seattle, rideshare drops on Alaskan Way in front of Colman Dock — not in holding.
- Boat dump: waits stretch. Same leaving a park lot. Request before you want to walk out of Bloedel.
- Taxis & Tours — local dispatch, 260 Olympic Dr SE. (206) 842-7660. Call. Don’t email the site.
- Tate Forest Transportation — booked private cars (airport, weddings, groups), not a street hail.
- The long version: taxis & transport.
Bike
Rent at the terminal from Classic Cycle or Bainbridge Bike Co. Confirm hours before you walk off the boat. Helmet. The island is hilly.
- Visitor ride: Winslow waterfront, Eagle Harbor, back through town. That is complete. Bike itinerary.
- Hwy 305 is not a family path. Do not test a rental on the spine with kids.
- A 33-mile, 2,000-foot loop is Chilly Hilly in February, not a Saturday add-on after lunch.
- The ferry takes bikes. Adult westbound surcharge is on getting here / WSF. Own loading lane.
Bus
Kitsap Transit commute buses hit some sailings and run 305 toward Poulsbo. Useful if you already know the number. Not a tourist loop. Do not wait at the dock for a bus to Fay.
Car, parking, roundabouts
A car is only worth it if you leave Winslow. Origin math (Sea-Tac, drive-on vs walk-on, the bridge) lives on getting here.
- Downtown parking fills on summer Saturdays and Farmers Market mornings (10 a.m.–2 p.m., Town Square, uphill from Winslow Way).
- WSF/U-Park at the Bainbridge terminal is for people leaving a car and walking onto Seattle. Not for a Winslow lunch.
- 305 backs up when a boat dumps. School traffic is real. Neighborhood roads to Bloedel are residential — drive like you live there.
- Roundabouts on 305 and Madison. Yield. Do not stop in the circle to negotiate.
- Gas: Village Chevron on High School Road (by Safeway) and Fletcher Bay / Island Center. Town & Country is groceries, not fuel.
If you only need Winslow, leave the car in the Seattle lots and walk on.
Drive times from Winslow
Clock times, not fantasies. Pad for a boat dump on 305.

- Map from the dock. Pins, walking routes, travel times from where you are.

Don’t

- Assume an Uber is already waiting in a park lot.
- Bike 305 casually with kids.
- Park in the WSF lot for a Winslow lunch.
- Wait for a tourist bus to Fay. There isn’t one.
- Speed on 305 because you missed a boat.
FAQ
Do I need a car on Bainbridge Island?
Only if you leave Winslow. Downtown is a ten-minute uphill walk from the ferry. Bloedel Reserve, Fay Bainbridge Park, Grand Forest, Fort Ward, Lynwood Center, and most wineries are not walkable. Use BI Ride, a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or a car for those.
How far is downtown from the ferry terminal?
About ten minutes on foot, uphill, along Olympic Drive to Winslow Way. BIMA is at the top of that hill, at Hwy 305 and Winslow Way — not at the dock. Waterfront Park is off to the side, not through town.
How do I get to Bloedel Reserve without a car?
Timed ticket plus BI Ride (Kitsap Transit), a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. Bloedel is about a ten-minute drive from Winslow, not a walk. Request the ride before you want to leave the garden. Do not assume a car is waiting in the lot.
What is BI Ride?
Kitsap Transit’s Bainbridge on-demand and connector service. Cheap. Scheduled stops at the ferry, Bloedel, and Lynwood / Pleasant Beach. On-demand: Ride Pingo or call about two hours ahead. Visitors do not know it exists. It is not a promise to Fay, Fort Ward, or Grand Forest.
Can I get an Uber or Lyft on the island?
Yes. Both run. There is no taxi stand at the dock. Request when you need it. Waits stretch when a boat dumps or you are in a park lot. Pickup is not in the ferry vehicle holding. In Seattle, rideshare drops on Alaskan Way in front of Colman Dock.
Is there a bus to the beaches?
Kitsap Transit commute buses hit some ferry sailings and run 305 toward Poulsbo. That is not a tourist loop to Fay or Fort Ward. For beaches you want a car, BI Ride where it actually goes, or a taxi / rideshare.
Can I bike from the ferry?
Yes. Rent at Classic Cycle or Bainbridge Bike Co near the terminal — confirm hours before you walk off. Helmet. The island is hilly. The Winslow waterfront is the visitor ride. Hwy 305 is not a family path. A 33-mile loop is Chilly Hilly, not lunch.
Where do I park in Winslow?
Downtown lots fill on summer Saturdays and Farmers Market mornings. The WSF/U-Park lot at the Bainbridge terminal is for people leaving a car and walking onto Seattle, not for a Winslow lunch. If you only need downtown, leave the car in the Seattle lots and walk on.
How long does it take to drive the island?
About 20–25 minutes north to south. From Winslow: Bloedel ~10 minutes, Lynwood ~10, Battle Point ~12, Grand Forest ~12, Fay ~15, Fort Ward ~15, Exclusion Memorial / Pritchard ~10. No freeway. 305 backs up when a boat dumps.
What is the last ferry back to Seattle?
It changes. Check the ferry page the morning of, and be in the terminal before you think you need to be. The free Explore Bainbridge app has live Seattle–Bainbridge times. Do not stack a tight Seattle dinner after an island dinner.
